Saturday School was born out of a desire to actively help disadvantaged youngsters from the wider community and to share the privileges enjoyed by students at Isamilo. It is run by teachers and pupils who volunteer their time for about two hours on a Saturday morning. They teach English and then run football, basketball, music and swimming sessions for about 150 disadvantaged children and young people. It takes place on the school site.
The programme was started in 2001 by Dominic Harkins, an Isamilo history teacher at the time. It benefits all involved. The joy and enthusiasm of visiting students is obvious, the growing maturity and compassion of Isamilo students is noticeable and teachers have the opportunity to integrate more fully into Tanzania and work with less fortunate children.
Most of the pupils of Saturday School have lost one or both of their parents, a significant number due to HIV AIDS. Saturday School not only provides them with an education programme and opportunities for constructive social interaction, but also pays school fees, examination fees, and uniform and book costs for a large proportion of the 150 pupils who attend.
Money for supporting the children comes from the annual Mwanza Grand Charity Ball, PTA events and funds raised by school play performances etc. Other fundraising events include the monthly book swap, participation in the Kilimanjaro marathon and generous donations from family and friends.
