Trips

School trips at Isamilo School reinforce work covered in various subjects across the curriculum and are thoroughly enjoyable for everyone who takes part. Students learn about their local area or about the traditions and customs of people from different places.

During these trips, students carry out a lot of independent and group work which helps them to develop their social and citizenship skills. In Years Five and Six, these skills are developed further during three day residential trips, where children learn to become more independent. Some examples of the trips that have taken place in the past are shown below.

Year Three – Bujora Museum

In Year Three, the children visit Bujora Museum, primarily as part of their Geography and History work on the local area and the Massai and Sukuma tribes. The museum is dedicated to the history of the Sukuma Tribe and the children are able to see a large variety of exhibits and traditional buildings to help them gain a fuller understanding of the topic. The highlight of the trip is the traditional snake dance which always has the children either on the edge of their seat or pressed up as far back into it as they can go!

Year Four – Saa Nane Island

In Year Four, the children usually have a day trip to Saa Nane Island, a small reserve set on an island in Lake Victoria. The island is home to many species of animal including impala and rock hyrax and the children are able to compare the different habitats that animals live in. They also try out a spot of orienteering in a safe environment amongst other activities.

Year Five – Ukerewe Residential Trip

In Year Five the  students have traditionally visited the island of Ukerewe as part of their Geography work. Pupils spend three days on the island, learning about the different aspects of life there, such as traditional farming, local fishing methods and dancing and music. The trip reinforces work that the pupils have covered in class and is vitally important for their citizenship skills. We are very sympathetic to concerns of the children and parents for, what is for many, their first trip away from home, but the children always return with a new confidence and the trip is an important part of their education here at Isamilo international School.

Year Six – Bunda

Recently, in Year Six, the students have taken part in a three day camping trip to Bunda. They compare Bunda to their home town of Mwanza, considering the economics, natural resources and other aspects of Geography. The highlight of the trip is a safari around the nearby Serengeti National Park where they complete work on interdependence as part of their Science work. During their trip they do many other activities to enhance their understanding of work covered in class and to develop their independence.
