We believe that every child should have the best opportunity to reach their full potential whilst studying at Isamilo International School. We also recognize that the vast majority of our students have English as an additional language and many do not have the opportunity to speak English at home. This can create obstacles to learning that we aim to break down.
Any child who finds it difficult to access the curriculum on a day to day basis for reasons of language or a specific learning difficulty is given extra help by trained specialist staff. Many of these children only need help for a short while in order to develop their level of English or work on particular problems such as spelling. Others need a longer term programme tailored to their specific needs.
Children need to know what is expected of them in terms of work and behaviour. The school supports good behaviour and work through a clear discipline policy and reward system. This encourages the children to follow the school rules and work to their best ability.
The children who make the best progress at school are, in the vast majority of cases, the ones who have good support at home. The children take home spellings and homework on a weekly basis and we would like parents and carers to support the children and ensure they complete it on time. The children should be encouraged to remember their PE kits and swimming kits.
To accelerate their reading skills, it is important that each child is heard read on a regular basis from their reading scheme books and other literature such as library books. If English is not spoken at home then discussion of the books can be done in the child’s first language too.
We ask parents and carers to attend teacher consultation meetings twice a year, towards the end of Term One and around the beginning of Term Three. We also hold workshops, usually at the beginning of each year, to give advice on how each child can be best helped at home. Parents and carers are, of course, welcome to make an appointment to meet with teachers if they have any concerns.
