Children learn best through first hand experiences. By exploring the world around them children are able to interpret information and extend their learning. We make full use of our local environment and the fact that we are a two site school. Teachers plan activities which encourage the children to explore and investigate the school grounds.
In addition to this children are taken out of school to explore the local area. Learning is brought alive by first hand experiences. The trips the children go on reflect the children’s interests and topics being taught in school.
The children had been learning about Colours and were looking at the colours in the world around them. They visited the new traffic lights in town to see how colours help us in our everyday lives.
Transport was a topic the children were really excited about. Thye saw lots of different types of transport on their journey to the airport and then had the opportunity to find out how aeroplanes move.
As part of their Literacy work on recounts the children visted Tunza Lodge. The children observed different birds and the habitat in which they live, recording their findings using a tally chart. They then wrote a recount of their trip back at school.
The new hotel being built close to school was a good opportunity for Year 2 to go and find out about the materials used in construction.
