The busy port town of Mwanza is Tanzania’s second largest town and the economic heart of the Lake Region. It is located in the north west of Tanzania, on the shores of Lake Victoria, at an altitude of 1,100m. The economy in Mwanza is based on agriculture, fishing and trade, all of which rely on the lake for their existence. Tourism is on the up, due to Mwanza's good transport links (to the rest of Tanzania, as well as Kenya and Uganda) and proximity to the Serengeti National Park. |

It has a pleasant climate throughout the year: warm with low humidity and a gentle lake breeze. During the rainy seasons Mwanza experiences short but heavy rain storms, vital for agriculture in the region. The picture to the right is of Mwanza's most famous landmark - the precariously balanced Bismarck Rock. Legends abound as to what would happen if it ever fell.
