Extra Curricular

6th Form students have significant academic work commitments so their time is limited but education is not just about the academic side and we believe it is crucial that students get involved in a wide range of activities and have a chance to expand their horizons wherever possible. Of course, this is partly where the CAS aspect of the Isamilo curriculum comes in (see the 6th Form curriculum section for more details), but there are also a whole range of activities on offer outside of the required school hours. Extra curricular activities are also a vital component of university applications. Applicants are often requested to write about their extra curricular commitments and demonstrate how they have enriched their experience of academic life.

Naturally, the 6th Form students are welcomed at all the extra-curricular clubs and are part of all our sports teams, but in addition we offer a number of clubs tailored specifically to our older students. The International Award Silver level (the Tanzanian equivalent of Duke of Edinburgh in the UK) is something only undertaken by those older students who have already completed the bronze award, there are also football and basket ball clubs for senior students and opportunities available to play against staff in matches. These are designed to stretch more mature students and offer them a greater breadth of experiences in their Key Stage 5 education in preparation for university.
Early in year 12 all 6th form students are expected to participate in the extra curricular challenge weekend ‘Tufani Porini’. Originally an initiative in a Kenyan international school this 3 day residential takes students from their comfort zones making them work as part of a prearranged team to build camp, cook, clean and complete a series of mental and physical challenges in order to ‘survive’ the weekend. After 2 very successful years our students have commented on how much they learned about themselves and others. They have learned techniques which now help them manage their academic school life, not least the need for a good nights sleep! And in many cases have formed new friendships and found respect for others they new little of previously.

In addition, 6th Form are encouraged to independently set up clubs for any areas of interest that they may have. For example, in previous years a group of students put together a fashion show for charity, and some of our boys run football and basketball teams for the Saturday school. These are initiatives that they have set up entirely themselves.

Extra-curricular clubs generally take place between 3.30 and 4.30pm after school, but there are also lunch time activities and Saturday morning options. Students are given the option of signing up to clubs at the start of each term.
